Hamstring Strain, Purple Bruising Above Knee. Should Be Concerned About Clotting?
Hi. I have a self-diagnosed grade 2 hamstring strain (9 days ago). Have treated with rice but have also continued working and golfed yesterday. Tonight I noticed a very large deep purple bruise just above my knee and some bruising below the knee. I know that this is typical but I am concerned because I am due to fly in 2 days and am concerned about clotting. Any advice?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hi and welcome to HCM
The large deep purple bruise is likely to be due to a hematoma formation in the area. You need to avoid massaging the area and take a mild pain killer for relief. Avoid sitting for long hours. Do a cold compress on the area of injury. The pain and swelling might take over a week to subside. In case there is an acute pain and a sudden increase in swelling then consult your physician for a direct examination to rule out any infection in the area.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and informative and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care.
