Hard Lump Around The Calf With Gentle Throbbing Pain In The Leg. History Of Hard Hit On The Calf With Hockey Ball. Concerning?

A week and a half ago I got a very hard hit to the calf from a hockey ball which left a massive bruise down my leg. Over the last couple of days this has turned into a hard lump around the actual site of the hit. Is this anything I need to be worried about or be doing anything to, or will it go away on its own? I am also feeling a gentle, almost throbbing ache throughout my leg but am unsure whether this is related

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The bump over the calf after getting hit with hockey ball is due to accumulation of blood & it is called hematoma.

The blood cells accumulated are eventually broken down and absorbed in the body.

But this is a slow process & takes times to disappear completely.

Till that time, symptomatic relief is obtained by taking analgesics, ice compression & adequate rest.
Also maintain adequate hydration & proper nutrition.

If it still persists or associated with any other symptoms...then it will be better to consult your General Physician.

Wishing you a good health.
Thanks & take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello and Welcome to HCM,
Thanks for writing to us.
From description , this hard lump most probably formed due to haematoma formation (collection of blood) which might get fibrosed or calcified.
It will take few weeks to months to get disappear.
I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination of swelling. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.
Meanwhile give hot fomatation over it, You can take Tablet Motrin 1 tablet with food as and when required (upto 4 tablets daily).
this helps you.
Wishing you good health...
Regards.
