Has Ankle Braces Due To Polio And Cannot Walk Properly. Treatment?
Hi Im rajesh from andhra pradesh, India. I need a clarification. My brother has an ankle brace affected by polio. i meam his hankle will not bend back and forth. he is now 29 yrs of age. Due to this problem he will not walk like a normal man. he walkins with some slight limbing. Is there any chances of correcting this problem. if yes can i know the details of that. Please provide your valuable suggesitions and opinions.
Hi Mr.Rajesh, thanks for writing to HCM. The polio affected muscles are very weak with no inherent tone in them leading to bony deformities in the limb. yes, the deformities can be corrected even at his age also by two means : * tendon transfer surgeries * bony procedures - arthrodesis Initially, your brother needs a thorough evaluation for muscle power in all groups of muscles to see whether he is fit for any tendon transfers. If there are no active motor units (muscles), then the only option left is arthrodesis (fixing two bones in opposition) providing a stable joint. Consult an orthosurgeon. Regards
