Has Diarrhea, Exhausted, Pooped Food As Black Liquid, In Pain. Should I Take Him To Hospital?
My father in law has had diarreah for week. His doctors are sending him for a camera next Monday, but he has not eaten since Saturday. He went to the hospital yesterday for his consultation, but the doctor just told him to eat. He has been unable to get out of bed as he is so exhaused and any food come straight out as black liquid. He is in pain. Should we take him to the hospital. he thinks he could wait until the morning, but he looks terrible.
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
Is this black colored stool very foul smelling and watery in nature?
With the available described symptoms, there appears to be high possibility of melena.
Blood leaked in upper gastrointestinal tract gets converted to black color due to acid in stomach.
You should remain in touch with the treating doctor and should go for endoscopy.
He should also go for complete blood count, renal function test and serum electrolytes.
Hydration should be maintained by taking appropriate intravenous fluids.
Blood transfusion may be needed to to correct blood loss.
Take care,
Dr. Mayank Bhargava
