Hi Joyce! welcome to HCM! In Hashimoto's disease, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, your immune system attacks your thyroid gland. The underlying cause of the autoimmune process remains unknown. antibodies against thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and/or thyroglobulin cause gradual destruction of follicles in the thyroid gland .The resulting inflammation often leads to an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism).Hashimoto's disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in U.S. During the early stage of thyroiditis, the levels of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) may be normal. With chronic hypothyroidism, the thyroid hormone levels fall, and the level of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) becomes high. The most useful assay for determining thyroid status is measurement of TSH in the blood.Thyroid antibodies and thyroid scan help in confirming the diagnosis. You must consult an endocrinologist its fairly common disease and can be controlled by appropriate treatment. hope this will help you!take care!
