Have A Swollen Ankle. Part Of The Ankle Is Bruised By Blood Vessels. Swelling Below Knee. Suggestions?

I have a swollen ankle. It developed quickly two days ago although both the ankles have been very slightly swollen. It swells in the afternoon and evening. Yesterday one part of the ankle was briused by blood vessels.
I have a probably separate problem, on the same leg just below the knee - a painful but local swelling to do with an impact with a large dog when on my bicycle six days ago. I assume the swollen ankle is nothing to do with it but I mention just in case

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The spontaneous onset of swelling in both the ankles and bruising could be due to an inflammatory process in the ankle joints and most possibly due to Gout.

An antiinflammatory analgesic medication like Advil or Aleve will help in reducing pain & inflammation temporarily. Foot end elevation alleviates the swelling. Use of Elastic compression stockings are also useful.

Estimation of serum uric acid levels and other inflammatory markers will establish the diagnosis. I suggest you to consult your family physician for further evaluation and management.

Regarding your second problem, it could be a Hematoma which will resolve spontaneously with RICE regime (rest, ice packing, compression bandage, elevation of foot)

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
