Have Discomfort Due To Anal Fissure During Pregnancy. Taking Epsom Salt Baths. Should I Continue?

Hello I am 34 years old and am 34 weeks pregnant . I'm experiencing what I think is an anal fissure and am in extreme discomfort . I have been taking Epsom salt "baths". Should I continue? The pain is quite agonizing . To add to this, the left side of my torso has become extremely sensisitive in the last 24 hours. There is no redness or rash, skin is perfectly smooth. This came out of nowhere and the area is actually growing creeping toward my armpit and down to the edge of my waist. It's hypersensitive to touch of any kind or heat. What is it?

Hi,

I am sorry for the fissure. This is a common complaint during pregnancy as pregnancy itself causes constipation. So, continue the epsom salt bath. You can try adding a dilute antiseptic like savlon to the water.
There are some other measures like eating a high fiber diet [fruits like pineapple, apple, sapotas, watermelons, pomegranates, along with plenty of vegetables and salads]. Limit the protein in your diet [you can eat meat and eggs but not excessive, one helping in a meal should be sufficient] and eat whole wheat bread and rice if you like. Drink plenty of water and regular walk to stimulate the intestines. Avoid prolonged sitting.

Use an ointment like lignocaine jelly locally around the anus in small quantity [ two pea size] 10 minutes before passing motions as it will decrease the pain. Try to pass stools daily as some patients do not use the restroom in fear of pain. Remember it will worsen the problem as the stools become hard and cause more trauma. Use stool softeners like Isapagula in small quantities at night time to make motions slightly softer. All these must be tried regularly till you have soft stools daily. This will help you get rid of the condition.

Regarding skin sensitivity, it may be due to a condition called fibromyalgia or a peripheral nerve disease where nerves become very sensitive to slight touch. For this you need to consult a neurologist.

Hope this was helpful. thanks for using health care magic.
