Have Dizziness After Taking Concor For Hypertension. Blood Pressure Normal. Regular Alcohol Consumer. Advice?
hello doctor
Iam having hypertension and taking concor-5mg every day morning. Recently I am having diziness during whole day after taking the concor but my blood pressure found to be 126/98. I have visited the doctor and he stated that since my b/pressure is normal, you dont have to take additional medicine instead continue the concor. I am regularly consuming alcohol at night about 300 ml. kindly advice.
Thanks
Sunny

Hi. Thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.
Concor is Bisoprolol. It is a beta blocker having a cardioselective action. This drug has action mainly in heart and reduces the heart rate and cardiac output. You are taking an optimum dose. Bisoprolol can cause dizziness and bradyarrhythmias (irregular heart beat causing dizziness) but it is doubtful if such a minimal dose can cause both.
It may be due to alcohol as alcohol follows a zero order kinetics ie., only a small proportion of alcohol gets excreted at a particular time irrespective of the plasma concentration. Also, alcohol increases the metabolism (destruction) of Bisoprolol reducing its duration of action. If your dizziness is more in the later half of the day, then it could be due to reduced level of Bisoprolol consequent to its augmented metabolism by alcohol.
If you feel uncomfortable with Bisoprolol, you can discuss with your treating Dr for a change of drug. Drugs like ACE inhibitors will be useful for you. But Bisoprolol should not be stopped suddenly and needs to be tapered as per your Dr's advice. Also you will have to rule out other causes of dizziness like BPPV.
I hope this is useful to you.
