Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Have Fever, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Genetic Metabolic Disorder, SCOT Deficiency. Treat Ketosis. Is It Stomach Bug?
My son is 4 1/2 and is ill right now with fever of 101F. He had vomitting earlier and diarhea all day. He is also under investigation right know at the children's hospital for a rare genetic metabolic disorder called SCOT deficiency. He does have ketones in his blood right now (0.3ml/moll) which is not that elevated, but he's done this before and I know they will climb quickly in the night because of his fever to close to 6.0 ml/mol. No doctor has given be clear cut anwser as to when I should be my son in to treat the ketosis. And when he's sick like this with, what we think is a stomac bug, he's very lethargic and generally isn't well. What is your suggestion when it comes to a "cut off" for ketone levels to seek medical attention? Thanks
Blood ketone level is considered pathological if the levels are above 15-25 mM. Fever, vomiting and diarrhoea can increase the ketone levels and you should ensure that he has enough of carbohydrates to prevent development of ketosis.
I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.
