Have Had Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy, Passed On Child. On Epilim. What Can Help Him Through His Life?

I have had juvenile myoclonic epilepsy since age 13 and Im now 47. This has been fully controlled with Epilim 500mg. My son has inherited this epilepsy this year on his 18th birthday but it has been slowly coming I believe for a couple of years. This epilepsy has not effected me in anyway throughout life, driving, jobs etc but now my son is looking for work Im worried that he has to reveal it in mediicals for jobs and it will be held against him. Is there anything that can be passed on to future employers that may not make them think he is not suitable for work. People hear the "E" word and they think the worst. I have lied a lot throughout my life because I know I am capable of anything that other people without epilepsy are but people hold it against you and it still has a big stigma.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I agree with you fully that there is a lot of stigma still attached to epilepsy. This is despite the fact that a person with well controlled epilepsy is capable of doing any thing to perfection, just like anybody without epilepsy.

So, I see no reason that your son would be unable to do any job. Give him the confidence that he is fit for any job and there is no problem whatsoever because of his epilepsy.

I hope it helps.

Please get back if you require any additional information.

Best wishes,
