Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Initial conservative management can be tried in hammer toes, if any amount of flexibility is present in the involved toes. This consists of relieving pressure with adequate padding of the shoes and strapping. Also a shoe with a high & broad toe box has to be used.

If the toes are rigid, then surgical correction is indicated.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
