Have Heart Murmur Since Birth. Feet Sweats With An Awful Odor

I am a 32 year old male, in fair health. I have a heart murmur since birth. I have developed an unusual problem with my feet. They sweat profusely with an awful odor. Even after bathing they start sweating right away. The odor has become very noticeable even with shoes & socks on. I have tried powders, sprays, nothing helps. Any ideas?

Cardiologist 's  Response
Dear patient,

The first thing that needs to be ruled out is an active infection, particularly fungal. If this is not the case, and other causes are ruled out (eg. metabolic disorders), there is a condition called hyperhydrosis, in which too much, uneeded sweat is produced either regionally or in a generalized way; there are some medications that can be useful to supress sweat glands, there are laser treatments and there is also surgery to control the nerves that are in charge of secreting sweat.

A neurologist would be a good specialist to look at this possibility.

Yours truly,

Dr Brenes-Salazar MD
