Have High Cholesterol, History Of Smoking A Pipe. Suggested For Quintuple Bypass Surgery. Right Diagnosed?
My 77 year old father has just been told he needs a quintuple bypass surgery. He has smoked a pipe for atleast 50 yrs, he has not seen a dentist for atleast 10 years. I would like to know if his surgeon should be notified of this. He has been told (according to him) that he has borderline diabetes for which he is not taking medication . He is taking medication for high cholesterol .
Postoperative problems - especially those related to the lung - are higher in smokers.
Longer periods of ventilation (delayed weaning) is common.
Blood sugar also needs greater attention, peri-operatively.
The treating doctor should be well informed.
Otherwise, in an emergency, a lot of time will be wasted in history and investigation, delaying appropriate management.
Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck
