Hi and thank you so much for this query.
I am so sorry to hear of the interference of this
diarrhea with your blood potassium levels replacement therapy.
I would like to ask if you have any idea of what the possible cause of this low potassium levels is? Is it linked to the diarrhea or are there any medications you are taking that can explain this or any other conditions?
With that said potassium is principally obtained from the digestive tract. Diarrhea would interfere with its absorption as well as increase it wastage in stool. It will not be surprising that replacing it orally in someone with diarrhea may prove ineffective.
For sure I don't know why your doctor is hesitant to replenish the body stores with an IV drip. This is because your control over the weeks has shown progressively decreasing values despite your continued oral intake. Trying another method or a modification to the treatment plan should be strongly considered. Before getting to an IV drip, he may want to step up the oral dose and see if there is any change in the treatment response.
I will suggest you talk with your doctor on this again. Do not tell him what you want done, but ask what are his plans to rescue your continued falling values. if he has got no new plans and doesn't wants to try this option out, then you may want to get a
second opinion. At least, let him try increasing the oral dose and what difference this makes.
I hope this helps and provides guidance. If you have ore questions, we are ready to address them. I wish you well and hope you soon figure out something that works well for you.
