I had a hysterectomy in 2008. I was divorced shortly afterwards and have not been sexually active since. I recently attempted intercourse and my partner was unable to fully penetrate me. He said it felt like my Fagin s came to a loin and he could go no farther. I am obviously concerned and would Luke advice on what could be wrong. I have an appointment with my physician next week but Id like an idea of what to expect. Can a vagina grow shut? What is wrong with me?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Jay Patel's Response
Hi,
The vagina is opening and tube like passage to cervix which is an opening of uterus, and the distance from vaginal opening to the cervix is normally about 5-7 inches, and it increase with the stimulation during the intercourse. I don't think the vagina is shut, still it depends upon how the stitches were taken during the hysterectomy, as well as how the heeling has occurred as heeling occurs with fibrous bands which mostly are tuff, but a visual inspection is need to see what is going on.
Presuming that you had a TOTAL HYSTERECTOMY (Not Partial), it is common tat the length of the Vaginal passage becomes Shorter, How much short it is depends upon the length of the original passage, the length of vaginal tissue removed along with the uterus and also and also the adhesions formed post-operatively. A detailed examination by a Gyynaecologist with reference to notes on the surgery can help to a certain extend...............................
