Have Soft Swollen Glands Behind Ear, Painful While Turning Head, Stretching Skin. Prescribed Antibiotics. What Is It?
Worried about my 20yo daughter. she has a soft, quarter-sized swollen gland behind her right ear. It feels soft and like it is full of fluid. has had it about 2 weeks. 2 days ago another node adjacent to this one formed about the size of a pea. It is hard and painful causing her pain when she turns her head, stretching the scalp skin in the area. she has no other symptoms and is healthy. Visit to the Dr today resulted in scipt for anti biotics in addition to the ones she is currently taking for UTI. Dr. says it appears atypical and will send her to see an ENT if it has not improved in 6 days. I'm very wooried even though I realize its likely an infection. any advice? Thanks!
Hi and thanks for the query, t is important to know what the swelling is all about. It could be a lymph node or a swollen salivary gland. Other masses like cysts and lipomas could present as such, however lipomas would be generally painless. An abscess would give some pain, fever and shall be warm. Doing a needle aspiration to know its content could help and a complete blood count shall indicate if there is a probability of infection or not. A clinical evaluation coupled with these exams could help. Your primary Dr can be of much help, Kind regards
