Have Swollen Glands On Areola, Clogged, Hard Puss, Sore. Had Difficulty Nursing. Self Correcting?

I have noticed for a few years that one of the small glands on my areola has been clogged, I have had two kids and previously been unable to nurse them due to low production, we just ha our third baby and I am able to nurse just fine but I have noticed that the glam is more swollen, contains a hard puss like substance and is sore, do I need to have it looked at or is it somehing that will just correct it's self?

Hello,

Thanks for posting,

If swollen and sore then it is probably mastitis (is the inflammation of breast tissue. S. aureus is the most common etiological organism responsible, but S. epidermidis and streptococci are occasionally). You will require antibiotics in order to eradicate the infection. If my assumptions are correct, then your baby would not be able to feed from the affected breast or if the baby continuous you might instead infect her. I suggest you get some medical help first before you may continue breast feeding.

Hope this helps and wish you the best.
