Having High BP And Cholesterol. What Is Hypercardio Myopathy? Should My Children Also Get Screened?

What is hyper.... (something) cardio myopathy? Six of my eight aunts and uncles died of heart attacks or stroke in their 40s or 50s; my mom also died of heart disease--a stroke at 61. My living uncle was diagnosed with this cardio myopathy condition and I've been told to get myself and my children screened. I have struggled with high blood pressure since age 19 and now recently I've been diagnosed with
high cholesterol. My kids are 13 and 16 and extremely active in a variety of sports. Should I get them screened? Is the doc who suggested this overreacting?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a inflammation of the heart muscle/thickening of the cardiac muscle in which there is enlargement of at least some part of the heart. The sarcomeres are enlarged leading to myocardial disarray in which normal alignment of the heart muscle fibres is disrupted. There may be disruption of electrical conduction in the heart. This is passed on genetically by a autosomal dominant gene which affects the sarcomere genes, thus affecting the myocytes(heart muscle fibres). The disease can result in sudden death, breathing difficulty, palpitations ,dizziness, fainting and fatigue may occur. It would be prudent to get a Echocardiography and ECG/TMT screeening of the whole family done since there is history of sudden cardiac deaths in the family.A genetic screeening may also be done if required.

Cardiac Surgeon Dr. Smartin Abraham's  Response
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a condition in which one part of the heart becomes thicker. This makes it harder for blood to leave the heart, forcing the heart to work harder and it also can make it difficult for the heart to relax and fill with blood.
Causes of Hcm
Gene mutations
The heart muscle cells become jumbled contributing to an irregular heartbeat.
Can be caused when there is an obstruction of blood flow
So take care

Thanks for your question

The condition which you are referring to is known as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCMP). This Condition of Heart is related to Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) in which patient has probability of dying at a younger age. This condition has genetic predisposition and therefore runs in families hence, the family members should be screened and preventive measures are undertaken to prevent sudden cardiac death.
In HCMP, Heart muscles grow fat and makes the myocardium a substrate for ventricular arrhythmias which then leads to sudden cardiac death.
