Having Seizure Attacks. MRI & CT Scan Showed Periventricular Leukomalacia. Causes?

Hi, my son had a seizure attack on the 3rd day of his birth wherein his glucose levels dropped drastically, though he was in Neonatal care his problem went unrecognized, & he was treated for Hypoglycemia...however his seizure attacks started again when he was 2 years of age (starting with silent siezures & then jerks)..after which we were advised to do MRI & CT Scan which showed he is a periventricular leukomalacia child..Pls let me know what are the causes of the same

Hello

While seizure in first week of birth was related to hypoglycemia, second episode seems to be unrelated to sugar level. I am sure doctor must have checked up sugar level during second episode.

Periventricular leukomalacia is not a specific finding for any disease. Possible explanations are (i) due to episode of prolonged hypoglycemia or hypoxia during first seizure, (ii) any disease like metabolic disorder is there and your doctor will investigate for it, or (iii) it may be normal and only follow up will confirm. Your doctor might consider for an EEG and anti-epileptic drug for the baby.
