Having Sore Throat, Noticed A White Line In Mouth. Tonsils Removed. Was Heavy Smoker

Hi, for the last 9 months I keep having sore throats at least once a month. This time it has lasted for 3 weeks. My glands really hurt in my neck every time especially on the left and it really hurts when I swallow. I sometimes have earache with the sore throat but not every time. I really feel unwell and occasionally have days where I just sleep the whole day because I m so tired. Today I looked into my mouth properly for the first time and saw a prominent white line. I had my tonsils removed 3 years ago but with complications and it bled heavily after. I smoked quite heavily after it for about a year but haven t smoked since september 2012. I really don t feel well and I m starting to worry because it keeps coming back longer and worse.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Post tonsillectomy patients can still suffer from throat pain due to chronic pharyngitis which is not uncommon. It could be caused due to persistent infection in surrounding structures of pharynx which could include nose and throat. Even allergy could result in persistent pharyngitis. Smoking increases the chance of persistent pharyngitis. You are also suggesting prominent line on the posterior pharyngeal wall which could be chronic granular pharyngitis or a post nasal drip coming from an infection in the nose.

You still need to take symptomatic treatment including quitting smoking, avoidance of allergens, gargle with hot saline solution, use lozenges when you have sore throat. If you have fever and other symptoms of bacterial infection you could require antibiotics.

Regards,
Sreenivasan
