Can A Panic Attack Cause Elevated Troponin Levels, Or Does It Indicate Heart Damage?
Hello doctors, I suffer from panic disorder and agoraphobia born from health anxiety (cardiophobia). I ve been progressing well with therapy and am feeling pretty optimistic about remission. The last time I ever went to the ER back in late 2021, I suffered what I believe to be a panic attack. It was easily the most severe one I had suffered at the time and is what caused the agoraphobia to start. I had every classic symptom as well as a severe feeling of my heart squeezing painfully in my chest, which is what prompted me to go to the ER. The doctors there and my personal cardiologist said I was fine based on my blood work. Here s my question: my HS Troponin levels were 3 ng/L. My understanding is there shouldn t be any troponin in the blood unless damage was done to the heart. Is that true? Or can a panic attack cause an elevation in troponin as well? If it matters, I have no family history of cardiovascular conditions except hypertension. I personally do not have hypertension. I ve also had a stress echo done and my doctor said it was perfectly normal. Thanks for answering! :)
