Hematoma On Lower Leg Due To Injury. X-ray Shows No Break. Taking Naproxen. How Long To Resolve?

My husband suffered a haematoma on the front of his lower leg as a result of copper pipe falling on the limb.
It has been x rayed and doctor says no break but it remains quite large after a week. He is spending time with it raised and has been prescribed Naproxen.
How long should this take to resolve and is there anything else he should be doing to promote recovery?

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Naproxen is a non steroidal anti inflammatory drug ( NSAID).
Haematoma usually resolves within 15 days , however recovery depends upon the size of haematoma.
Ice pack massage + serratiopeptidase 20 mg three times in days will cure within 3-5 days.
Good luck.

This may take between 6-8 months to resolve on its own especially since it is a large haematoma with no muscle or soft tissue to help in its absorption.Your doctor may help by draining it surgically ,that may help hasten healing,a compression bandage over the site would need to be used after the procedure to prevent reformation of the haematoma.

Pain Medicine & Palliative Care Specialist Dr. Kerry Pottinger's  Response
Hi,
Your husband is correct to keep his leg raised and take pain killers. I would add that in order to avoid stiffness in his ankle and knee joints that may occur with rest, he should keep working his muscles. He can do this by simply moving his foot in circles to mobilise his ankle and keep blood flow through his calf. It may take another week for the swelling to go down. He should gently increase his mobilbity during this time but when sitting he should raise his leg.
I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Generally, Hematoma's will resolve within 3-4 weeks depending upon the size.

The management of the Hematoma is as follows -

* Rest to the injured part and don’t involve in activities which puts additional strain on the injured tissues.
* Ice packing should be applied once in every 2 hours.
* Use elastic compression bandage around the swollen area
* Elevation of the limb
* Analgesic & anti inflammatory medications as needed

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Hi and welcome to HCM

From description , this hard lump most probably formed due to haematoma formation (collection of blood) which might get fibrosed or calcified.
It will take few weeks to months to get disappear.
I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination of swelling. Give hot fomatation over it, You can take Tablet Motrin 1 tablet with food as and when required (upto 4 tablets daily).
