Bleeding from a tumor is an indication that the tumor has become erosive or necrotic -- that is, it is invading nearby blood vessels or has outgrown its own blood supply -- both of which are signs of advanced cancers. However, just because someone isn t coughing blood doesn t necessarily mean his or her cancer isn t advanced. Tumors that are deep within the lung and fairly distant from large blood vessels may not cause hemoptysis until very late in the course of the disease. Now, it s also important to remember that coughing and weight loss are not necessarily due to cancer. Your brother might be suffering from an infection (e.g., tuberculosis) or an autoimmune disease (e.g., sarcoidosis). His tests today should shed some light on his situation. I hope he does well.
