Hello. I am a pharmacist, not a physician. Can you explain to me how cranial nerves VIII and VII are mapped or identified, to prevent damage when using cyber knife to remove a vestibular schwannoma in a 70 year old male? Thank you for your response.

Cranial nerve VII - Electrodes are connected to your facial muscles and the area near the nerve is simulated intraoperatively, so that the muscle twitching can be appreciated and thus avoid injury to the nerve.
Cranial nerve VIII - Electrodes are placed in the scalp and the waves in the hearing pathway from cochlea till brain are recorded and any variation in the wave suggests a new lesion.
