How Can chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease In An Elderly Person Be Treated?

My father,73 years is suffering with COPD, having 30% of lung capacity as per lung function test. He is having coughing as well. He is taking duolin LD. Should we replace it with Budecort. He needs to take 4 times nebulization. Is it OK ? Are there any alternative medicines available for COPD permanent cure ?

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a condition in which the elasticity of the lungs would have decreased and the changes that has happened is irreversible, thus decreasing the vital capacity of the lungs.
Duolin contains bronchodilator, which when given in the form of nebulization would help in easy breathing. It can be administered every 6 the hourly, when necessary.
Since he is having cough, he needs to be treated with mucolytic syrup along with a course of oral antibiotics. Adding steroids like Budecort would help in decreasing the inflammatory response of the respiratory tract.
Kindly consult Physician for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
