How Can Down Syndrome In A Future Pregnancy Be Averted?
I am 36 year old having a 3 year old daughter who is having down syndrome, again when I conceived my ultrasonic report (N.T),REFLECTED THE ABNORMALITY and my consulting doctor suggested me to abort the child,so just few days back I went through an abortion.Doc. plz suggest me what should I do to..
I appreciate your concerns. Have you done the karyotyping for your daughter. Does she have trisomy or chromosome translocation abnormality. Since the second pregnancy also was suggestive of Down syndrome I suggest that you and your husband should consult Geneticist and do the karyotyping. If you both have normal chromosomes the recurrence risk is just 1% more than the age related background risk. If karyotype shows translocation abnormality it depends on who is carrying that translocation. If mother is a carrier the recurrence risk is 12% ( it means that 88% chance that baby will be normal) and if father is carrier the recurrence risk is 1% more than the background risk.
You need not be disheartened. You can plan for another pregnancy. You can confirm the baby's chromosome normalcy by diagnostic tests like chorion villus sampling and then continue the pregnancy. Take a tablet of folic acid daily from now on. I hope this is helpful.
