Hi Doctor, 3 weeks ago I had sex with a lady whom Is likely to be infected with HIV. During the sex, my condom for torn exposing me to unprotected sex. Due to the fear, I run HIV tests which tested negative. But I later got sick, went to the hospital and was tested and diagnosed of UTI infection. I feel kinda okay tho. But I recently got a little cold and sorethroat. The sorethroat is quite not severe and kinda gone but the cold is still there but not really severe. During the time of the cold, I realised my lymph nodes at my chin area is a little raised. I m really scared. Is that still HIV infection, since I read HIV infections causes inflammation of lymph nodes. Please talk to me Doc.
Upper respiratory tract infection also can lead enlarged lymph nodes. Antibiotic course can be prescribed for that and after that it resolves.
In HIV, lymphadenopathy remains persist. For HIV work up, investigate with CMIA combo HIV test or Fourth generation ELISA test after six week of exposure.
Only few patients around 2% can be positive at 3 month, so to rule out HIV more conclusively you can test again with HIV test after 3 month. The gold standard confirmatory test is western blot test if you are searching for best test but it is costly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Parth Goswami
