Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi! I am 32 year old female call center agent diagnosed with hypertension . My BP was 160/100. I do not always get the same BP. I usually take my own BP from time to time and most of the time my BP is within normal limits which is 120/90. Today I had my pre-employent medical examination and found out that I am suspected for high blood pressure . I was given a referral for a cardio consult. Im afraid that this might affect my employment as a Quality assurance analyst. please help and advise me what i can do to help my BP go back to normal.
welcome to healthcaremagic
u cant be called as a hypertensive unless your BP shows high reading on two consecutive readings 8 hrs apart..u need to relax and calm yourself before BP is recorded..it was high cos u were anxious..dont worry all your cardiac evaluation will be absolutely fine..have a nice day
There is something known as "white coat hypertension". BP shoots up as soon as you become conscious of the fact that your BP is being measured. This is because of anxiety. Try to remain calm and avoid physical activity just before measurement of BP.
Thank you for your comments, it's been a big relief. I do think it's because of my anxiety and i just hope that the tests will all turn out well. I wish I can keep my heart calm when i see the cardio so i can get better results. Thank you. What kind of evaluation do you think the cardio would have me? So i would know what to expect when I get there.
Hello Karen, you are welcome. Obviously, your doctor is going to check your BP. If he feels necessary, he might advise you more tests.
Some points which might help you:
1. Do deep breathing relaxation exercises on a regular basis. This will cool your nerves in general and even during consultation.
2. Reduce your salt intake.
3. Regular physical activity and weight reduction measures, if you are overweight
4. Wear loose fitting clothes during consultation so that they dont interfere with your BP measurement.
