How Can A Bipolar Person Deal With Depression?

My husband is bipolar and has been in bed for two days, only to come out and eat the food I have prepared. This isn t the first time he has been depressed for 1 1/2 years, I am the main source of income and I was wondering if I should confront him or just let him stay in bed and play video games/read until he is ready to come out?

hi.. i have understood your concern...
your husband is diagnosed as bipolar disorder in the past and for the last 1.5 years, he is in bed, not doing any work, not talking properly, tired, lethargic..so it feels that he must be in depressive episode of the bipolar disorder and mostly he is bipolar type 2..

there are drugs approved for the bipolar depression and u can give him on a regular basis..i dont know about the previous treatment details..

in my opinion, u shud give him drugs I am mentioning here..

tablet. fostera [10 mg] once at night..fostera is a combination of fluoxetine [20] and olanzapine [10]..which is USFDA approved for bipolar depression...start giving this drugs to him and gradually interact with him about his illness and what he thinks about his and family's future..

u shud educate him about the current condition of the family and ask him what he can do? u can take him to the counselor or psychotherapist.. when he starts talking about all his problems, he might realize that he has to do something for the family and he cant just sit whole day in a room...

other drugs u can give are:
tablet. quetiapine [100 mg] at night and can increase up to 400 to 700 mg in aday..depending upon the response..

i hope this advice will be helpful to you..best luck...

Hi
Thanks for using healthcare magic

Decreased interaction, self care etc are part of depression. I think, his depressive symptoms are getting back. In that case, he needs higher dose of mood stabilizer with antidepressant. Better to consult a psychiatrist for proper management. In case, you need further help, you can ask.

Thanks

Hi,

I think that you can gently ask him to leave the bed and help you in your chores. If he is indeed not well, he will probably tell you so. If not, you will be able to find out by observing him closely. For example, if there are no changes in his appetite, sleep, interaction and other behavior then it is unlikely that he is depressed enough to remain in bed all the time.

Best wishes.
