My mother who was 80 at time went to Turks+Caicos on vacation in April and the weather there was hot.She lives in Canada so the day after we arrived we walked in the hot sun around noon (although she had a hat and water) , after we stopped to drink something cold after walking about 30 min. and then went into some shops. About 10 min later, she said something to me and her speech was slurred. We found out it was a mini stroke after. My question: could the dramatic change in climate from cold to hot , have caused the stroke, and how do you prevent that from happening again? thank you
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes, dehydration is known to cause strokes. In hot weather, it is extremely important to keep well hydrated. This risk is more in older people, as the arteries supplying blood to the brain may already be atherosclerotic (narrowed). Also, we should screen for other risk factors of stroke such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, etc. If they are found, they should be treated. In your mother's case, she should be on life-long aspirin and atorvastatin to prevent strokes in future.
Thanks
