Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hi my 7 year old has swallowed a coin whilst abroad on holiday. we have taken him to the hospital and he has had an xray and the coin was located in his stomach. he has had a bowel movement today and nothing has come out. he is going to the hospital again later for another xray. they have mentioned that if the coin is facing a certain way they will need to remove his intestines. is this right?
Thanks for asking query on HCM. Your child has a foreign body( a coin) in his abdomen. I can understand your concern. I am not sure - when the coin was located in stomach from 1 st X ray - why was it not removed endoscopically ? was it already in intestines ?
Most of the foreign bodies pass through the intestine on its own without any problem. It it get stuck in small intestine for long time or causing symptoms of obstruction like pain abdomen, vomiting or distension they only they would advice an opedation to open intestine and remove coin and not intestine!!!
Don't worry as it may go out of your child's belly without any problem. But it needs followup till it comes out.
Take care
