How Can Acute Pharyngitis Be Treated?

I have pain in the back of my throat but only on my left side, along with pain in my left ear. When I looked with a tongue depressor I could see white patches in my throat. Its painful to even swallow saliva, let alone I can barely eat or drink. I went to care now, they tested me for strep and she said it came back negative but she said she believes it s probably another type of infection. She diagnosed me with Acute Pharyngitis. I have been taking amoxicillin for 2 days and the pain still hurts.care now recommended if it does not get better in 3 days to return to office but I really do not know if I should.9

I would agree, your symptoms sound consistent with acute pharyngitis. It is important to note that you can get false positive test results for strep (the test says negative when indeed you are positive). This is possibly why your doctor still prescribed antibiotics. With that said, viral pharyngitis can present similarly and is also very painful. Continue to take your antibiotics and if you do not start to feel better I would recommend you follow up with your doctor soon. In the meantime, you can take over the counter NSAIDS (ibuprofen, aleve) to help with inflammation and pain, as long as you are not allergic to these medications.
