Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Chronic Cough And Chest Congestion Be Treated?
My mother is 97 .in November had shingles and pneumonia. In hospital for week .got over pneumonia and December got over shingles .ftwo weeks ago took her to get her hair done.after that I claim she caught cold cause someone their was coughing. Been giving her liquid and cough syrup does not cough up congestion easily and when she does it is yellow and greenish. I was worried may have gotten pneumonia again but has not been feverish worried to take her out because of all the flu . She feels good occasionally but still congested. Should I take her to prompt care to get chest X-ray to rule out pneumonia and maybe get antibiotics
If you take my advice, I would recommend the following:
1. As mentioned that your mother had pneumonia, so she must have been on antibiotics at that time and as her sputum is yellow and greenish, it seems that there is a bacterial infection. So get your mother's sputum culture and sensitivity done.
2. In the meantime, ask your mother to do steam inhalation at least twice daily which will certainly help.
3. Her head end of the bed should be slightly elevated.

Her head end of the bed should be slightly elevated. 4. Any OTC cough formula containing Bromhexine and Pseudoephedrine or Phenylephrine will help expel the sputum easily. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr. Prabhash Verma
