Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 67 year old father (a lifelong adult smoker) has had bad coughing fits lately. It happens frequently and often sounds like a real deep grunting sound. He insists that is just sinus and allergies but I am worried. He was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Stage IV in June of last year. Had it removed. Went through rehab and has been going through chemo and radiation as of late. He completed his chemo in Feburary but had a radiosurgery to remove a small growth found near the same area. I don t think this the cancer had anything to do with it. I am just trying to figure it out.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
There are many causes for cough including medication reactions, reflux, allergies and other causes of irritation. If he still smokes, that could be the cause as well. Here are some things to try with his doctor's approval. A trial of antihistamine and nasal steroid may help if it is allergies. Albuterol may help if it is from bronchial irritation or smoking. An acid blocker like Prilosec may help if he is having reflux. Please be sure to check it out with his doctor. While some of these are over the counter they may have interactions with his other medications.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
