Hello,

Since it's been long since she is suffering, diagnosis of the cause will have to be done. The factors that can cause such discomfort are allergic reactions to foods, medications, or environmental factors that is leading to chronic symptoms. Your mother should avoid taking food or drinks that trigger the symptoms. Check out the medications that she has been taking, it can be a side reaction to it.

She should avoid direct exposure of skin to sunlight, chemicals, pollutants, animal dander, pollen, poison ivy, etc. Allergic reaction can be reduced by taking antihistamines. She should take proper care of her hygiene. Such symptoms can also be due to herpes and neuropathy. You are advised to get her clinically examined by a GP to detect any developing neuropathy, underlying medical conditions like herpes, STD, liver, kidney, thyroid issues, psoriasis, dermatitis, etc.

She will have to go through various blood and imaging tests, thereafter she will be treated. Her treatment will depend on the disease diagnosed. At present, she can apply cream / ointment hydrocortisone on the area affected to get rid of the discomfort.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
