Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Constipation Be Treated While Suffering From Parkinson's Disease And Lewy Body Dementia?
My boyfriend has PD w/ LBD. Is there something I can give him to stave of constipation? It happens about every 2-3 weeks. It really revs up the LBD until he gets relief. Otherwise BMs are fairly normal. At least no complaints brought to my attention. He is 69 and in good physical shape.
I'm sorry to hear your boyfriend has been having trouble with constipation. As you might now, constipation can occur with Parkinson's disease from it affecting the nerves to the intestines.
I would suggest a medication like bisacodyl that would stimulate the bowels to move and prevent constipation. If the stools are hard, he could also take Miralax or docusate to soften the stools and make them easier to pass.
All of these you should be able to find over the counter. He can take these whenever he has trouble with constipation, and they have very little side effects.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,

Parkinsonism or Lewy body dementia may cause constipation:
1. Drugs like anti-Parkinson drugs or anticholinergic drugs may cause constipation.
2. Lack of fiber diet.
3. Poor nutrition.
4. Dear of going to toilet or fissure or hemorrhoids.
Maintain bowel movement chart. Eat high fiber diet. Regular exercise or walking may useful. Benefiber or metamucil fiber may useful. Use syrup Lactulose or Cremaffin plus at night time after dinner may useful for short term.
If fecal impaction can be examined by your surgeon. If fecal impaction is there means removed manually. Please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
