How Can Constipation While Suffering From Dementia Be Treated?

Hi. Mom is 87 with Dementia and lives with me. She is going downhill. Refuses to eat but when she has a movement she strains and her colon rolls outside the anus some. Compassuss came out and are ordering some kind of softener. Is there anything besides trying to get more fluid in I should do until they get the stool softener here? She never complains but was silently crying this afternoon.
