How Can Cough And Throat Pain Be Treated?

My ENT referred me to pulmonary specialist in which I m still awaiting to be seen. In meantime when he put the camera down thru my nose he said I have really bad excessive mucus sitting at too of lungs and causing blockage all thru my passages. I ve had chronic bronchitis all my life that I recall and recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Very hoarse voiceovers in and out. Mainly out these days. Quit smoking after 20 years of smoking as of last year in May, so little over a year now... But I can t breathe for nothing. And the constant coughing is hurting my throat and weakening my oxygen intake. How can I was this until my appointment?? Mucus is very hard and dry when I am able to hack little pieces up. Need to break it down.. Help! Please

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I think you maybe suffering from chronic bronchitis with expectoration. Avoid cool drinks and freeze water, use water vapor inhalation and salt water gargling thrice a day for five days. Get chest x-ray and sputum examination is done, use mucolytics like Ambroxal or Gunefenacine under your doctor guidance. Use antibiotics like Amoxiclav 625 mg twice a day for five days. If symptoms not improved please consult your pulmonologist he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
