How Can Dehydration While Suffering From A Stomach Infection Be Treated?
My mother is 83 and appears to be suffering from a stomach virus. It came on quickly. She is throwing up and has diarrhea. She isn’t in great health, but other than having COPD she has been doing well lately. In situations like these I often worry how best to help her. I immediately want to take her to a walk-in care clinic. It is the weekend, but she isn’t really in a position to be able to go at the moment. We could, but hoping some of the symptoms subside for a bit. Also, she doesn’t want to go. My concern is mainly dehydration. Any advice?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Rehydration with electrolyte rich fluids is important, e.g. Revolyte or something similar. Alternatively, she has to be omitted for intravenous rehydration and monitoring of vital parameters.

Dehydration is treated with oral fluid replacement therapy. If she is not in a position to do take then need secure intravenous line. Need oral rehydration solutions intake frequently same time check her blood pressure, cardiac function other wise it may deteriorate. Use treatment for stomach Infection like Ornidazole Ofloxacine twice a day for five days. If symptoms not improved please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.
