Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My brother suffered from allergy since 8th grade, he is 31 now. He suffered from facial palsy and hypertension last year for which he got treatment. Now he is fine but somehow, we don’t understand his behavior doesn’t talk to us. He tries to be alone and avoid company and talks to himself and laughs sometimes. He understands everything but lost interest in activities. Whenever we ask him to visit a psychiatrist he refuses by saying that he is fine. We consulted doctor on his behalf who told us that he is suffering from depression and we should get him married. Our family is worried about his condition. Can we give any kind of medications at home or how can we convince him to visit a psychiatrist?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
According to your history provided, your brother is suffering from Mental Illness. But diagnosis cannot be pronounced with this limited information and not talking with patient by a Psychiatrist. Because symptoms of Talking to self and laughing to self could be indirect way of assessing hallucinations( psychotic symptom). there are mouth dissolving preparations of medications available that could be mixed in food or water, they are tasteless and odorless which could be given to patient and can be easily taken to a psychiatrist as the patient can be kept sedated for nearly 8 hours with them.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
