How Can Diarrhea Be Managed While On Cipro And Tinidazole?
My wife (65) was diagnosed with Urinary tract infection. Before the urine culture results came she was given alkasol syrup and Clavam 625 (twice a day). When culture results came, the infection was resistant to amoxycillin, so the doctor prescribed Ciplox 500 (Ciprofloxacine). She started having watery loose motions immediately. So we stopped alkasol syrup as it had diarhea as side effect. The doctor asked us to continue with Cipro with tinidazole. It has been three days but the watery loose motions continue. The doctor says it may be viral. The urine problems and fever has gone. What should we do for loose motions?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Loose motions even after taking Ciprofloxacin and Tinidazole for urinary tract infection can be due to bacterial imbalance in the intestinal bacterial flora due to intake of Amoxicillin. Hence, a course of probiotics, curds, bananas, activated charcoal may help. Also get the stool and blood tests done to see for any infection or other causes like diabetes and so on. She can take Imodium after each loose motions, maximum 4 to 6 per day. Also identify the foods and beverages that instigate or enhance the problems. Correct the water and electrolyte balance with plenty of oral fluids, electrolyte solutions and so on. Also get an ultrasonography of abdomen and colonoscopy, if diarrhea is not controlled with above measures.
Take care.
With Regards.
