My wife got a prescription for an ointment to treat her genital herpes from her doctor, but this was years ago, we have not been able to afford to see a doctor to get a prescription for the medication or afford to fill a prescription which was very expensive. We were hoping that in the intervening years that maybe this medication might be available over the counter or at least less expensive, the problem is we cannot remember the name of the ointment. I do remember that around the time my wife was getting treatment i had heard that they had came up with an oral medication( a pill) that had almost the same name as the ointment. is there any chance you would know the name of this ointment or of any over the counter treatment that would be of any help with genital herpes outbreaks?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Acyclovir Tablets and creams are available and marketed by many companies for the treatment of genital herpes and to prevent the recurrence as a suppressive therapy. But regarding getting them over the counter is not advised. Better get these drugs in appropriate doses and according to the need from your doctor and have the same under his/her supervision.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
