How Can Hallucinations While Suffering From Dementia Be Treated?
Hello. I have a question relating to my grandmother. She was recently diagnosed with early stages of dementia. I wanted to know if there is anything me and my family can do to help her. Sometimes she hallucinates and says she sees a person or more than one in the room or she sees objects such as tree limbs, trash and asks us to move it. Should we tell her that nothing is there or go along with her? We don t want to upset her.
There is no point in correcting her. It is best just to ignore these statements. Sometimes antipsychotic medications can be used to stop the hallucinations but unfortunately, they are very dangerous in older patients.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Kathy Robinson
