How Can High Blood Pressure Levels Be Controlled?

(1) Last week, i went for a health checkup as part of admission to university in August this year. When i took my blood pressure, it was recorded as 133/76. The nurse took a second reading and it was the same as well. When i saw the doctor, she told me that my blood pressure was slightly high, and she took a third time, but this time round, i wasn't told of my pressure.

I was wondering if this blood pressure of 133/76 - isit considered as hypertension. My dad has history of hypertension and is currently under medication. And also, what are some things that I can do to keep my pressure normal if I do not want to see a doctor as of now, i.e. food to eat and abstain?

hello,I have gone through your question. Thanks for using HCM.Actually blood pressure of 133/76 is not hypertension. I need to know your age to guide you properly.except for pediatric age i.e. less than 12 yrs of age, this level of blood pressure is very much normal.normal BP below age of 60 should be less than 140/90 and above age of 60 should be less than150/90.In any case your reading is very much normal. However since your father is hypertensive you should be careful .follow healthy life style, take less salt and exercise regularly,Avoid undue stress and enjoy normal life.My best wishes

Hello. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

Blood pressure is a factor that is very variable during a day. It is prone to change under hormonal, physiological and psychological events during a day. Also, a very well known fact is that some people have blood pressure ''jumps'' when they are visited in a hospital - the ''white collar hypertension'' effect.

Normal blood pressure figures, standardized worldwide are: systolic 100-139 mmHg and diastolic 60-89 mmHg. Maybe these blood figures came to you as a surprise and a worrisome phenomenon. Therefore, it could have been even higher, as it is when we perform physical or psychological and stressful activities every day. My opinion is that there is nothing to worry about. And, keep in mind, blood pressure should be measured at rest, sitting and 15 minutes after the last demanding activity.

I hope I was helpful. Take care.

Kind regards,
Dr. Meriton
