Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Hip Fracture Be Treated While Suffering From Congestive Heart Failure?
My father has been battling CHF for a number of years. He just turned 80 and broke hip about a month ago, and has not been able to really get normal since. He is now in the hospital and he is retaining fluid despite the heavy lasix doses. What suggestions do you have?
It is a difficult situation your father has found himself in. First step is definitely to stabilize his heart. Lasix is the way to go. Besides that fluid restriction per oral and IV is advised.
Additionally, there are a lot of cardio protective drugs that your clinician would definitely take into account.
In the meantime, for the hip fracture, he should keep it immobilized with traction if necessary. Pain management is to keep him comfortable.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
