How Can Imbalance In The Legs Be Treated?

I had a hip replacement in Oct 2016, I am currently doing rehab and I am not able to balance on either leg for more than 3 or 4 seconds without having something to help me balance. I am 72 years old , but don't think age has much of an affect. Any ideals why I cannot balance myself with help?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Balance problems in the elderly may be due to

1. Muscle weakness.
2. Posterior column lesions.
3. Vit B12 deficiency.
4. Posterior circulation stroke.
5. Lumbar spondylosis etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Please consult your doctor he will examine and do MRI spine treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
