How Can Iron Deficiency Be Managed?

I m iron deficient. When the RDA says you need 18mg a day of iron does that mean you need to ABSORB 18mg (which seems impossible to me given how little of iron you consume is actually absorbed by the human body) or does it mean you need to CONSUME that much. What I m asking is... if you eat a food that has 10% of your RDA of iron, are they factoring in how much people absorb or not? Because if not, I don t see how everyone in the world isn t iron deficient.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

What is your hemoglobin status?? depending upon your body weight and hemoglobin you can caliculate iron deficit by Body weight×( Target hemoglobin -- actuval hemoglobin)×2.4 +1000. So your intestine won't obsorb more than 2, mg of iron per day. You may need to take intramuscular iron injections for replacement. Please consult your physician he will examine and calculate the deficit iron and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
