How Can Nose Bleeding Be Treated While On A Cardiac Stent?

I am concerned about my 72 yr. old brother s a-fib and heart stent meds. He got the stent a few weeks ago and was put on Plavix and Lipitor. He told his pcp he was tired all the time since taking the new meds so they took him off Lipitor and added two of Eliquis tabs a day to his regimen. After no more than 2 weeks if that he sneezed and started bleedin badlt from his nose. Ambulance was called and he was taken to em. Room at small local hospital where they had to cauterize his nose. Why couldn t he just be on Warfarin? Is it not true that it s the only blood thinner that they can reverse if there is a bleeding issue? Are not all the new ones irreversible if there s a major bleed?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Nose bleeding may be due to hypertension or thrombocytopenia or dryness or nasal pricking, etc. Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Please check your platelet count, check your blood pressure. Avoid vigorous blowing of nose, use normal saline nasal spray thrice a day for five days. Apply pressure for few seconds, if symptoms not improved need nasal endoscopy and nasal packing. Please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly. Take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
