Hi. My boyfriend has recently started a new job where he is lifting approx. 90 at a time. He has been an athlete and is in good shape but his old job was not physical. This morning, he woke up and twisted wrong which resulted in lower back pain on the left side. He went to work today and struggled through but it s been getting worse ever since. Now he has numbness and tingling with pain sometimes all though his left leg and says it feels heavy. He s also in severe back pain and it keeps getting worse. Can you help? Do we need to go to the ER?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It seems you have got acute lumbar sprain with radicular pain in left lower limbs. Most likely cause is disc prolapse with resultant nerve root compression in lower lumbar spine. You need to stop lifting weight and take bed rest for initial 3 to 4 days. Diagnosis can be confirmed by MRI of the lumbo sacral spine with screening of whole spine. Please get it done from radiology center nearby you. Meanwhile start Tab. Pregalin with Tab. Ultracet for pain relief.
Visit to expert orthopedic surgeon is highly recommended.
Regards.
