Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son has a 8 yr old son. He gets mad at him and he gets yelling and berating. My son, is 54 and his temper is very bad. I try to help by telling him that somethings as just normal, tham it starts calling me, then calls his little boy names, along with ignoring him. What do you suggest?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
This is a challenging situation. Your son is an adult and it will be difficult to get him to change his behavior. Does your son respect you? Can you have a calm, mature conversation with him during which he understands that you want good for him and his son?
If you can reason with your son and he listens. I believe he needs professional counseling. Good counseling can be life changing and a side effect will be that it will be beneficial for your grandson. If your son is not willing to go to counseling, can your grandson move out of the house and live with another adult?
I suggest you to talk to your son's primary care doctor (or your primary care doctor if he does not have one) and get recommendations for counseling from a psychologist or psychiatrist in the community.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
